Answer: It is true. A good Audio recording Engineer can make your music sound as if it is a good finished product; therefore, it will appear that an Audio CD Mastering is not needed. That is because he knows his tools and understand the use of high pass, low pass and band pass filters. However,it does need to be checked for proper leveling and checked to see if the frequencies are the best that they can be. To do that it takes some specialized gear and a skilled technician to do the enhancement, leveling, smoothing ,rolling off,cleaning and red booking just to name a few.

If not,a Parametric EQ is needed ( It must be hardware. No self respecting Audio Mastering Engineer would be caught without one) to improve presence and remove unwanted harmonics. Removing unwanted Audio Harmonics improve the clarity in your Audio CD Mastering tracks.Again, sometimes a notch at the frequency's site or at it's octave can remove Harmonics. No two instruments can share the same space in frequency at the same time. They will fight. The result is distortion (distortion that's naturally occurring, not distortion that's electronically induced). My weapon of choice is a Manley Massive Passive EQ that can cut, deep with various Audio CD Mastering software. Manley can cut up to 60 decibels per octave on the low pass filter. Many times you may not realize that your instruments were fighting until you hear the difference in sound. Now at this point you are totally blown away and sold on CD Mastering!
